Hard Days Night in Rockland MaineRockland to Celebrate the Beatles!

"After more than three decades, it has not aged and is not dated; it stands outside its time, its genre and even rock. It is one of the great life-affirming landmarks of the movies."

So writes film critic Roger Ebert, describing The Saltwater Film Society's summer anniversary movie presentation, A Hard Day's Night.

A groundbreaking film that arguably launched the world into what we now think of as "The '60s," A Hard Day's Night is coming to The Strand Theatre in Rockland, Sunday, 05 July, at 3:30 p.m.

But come early! Because we'll be hosting a "British Invasion" block party beginning at 1 p.m. The party—a Fourth of July weekend tradition celebrating the anniversary of the Grand Reopening of The Strand—will feature food, costumes, and our own version of the Fab Four (performing live!). As always, we'll also be giving away an array of eclectic door prizes.

Maybe you were around in the summer of '64—the "Camelot" years, the year of the debut of the original Ford Mustang—and were amid the lucky throngs who attended the movie upon its release. Or maybe you arrived late to the party and have wondered what all the fuss was about. Either way, here we are, 45 years later. And A Hard Day's Night is coming July 5th to The Strand.

A Night Cut Short

22 February, 2009: Alas, the weather intervened, but despite a heavy snowfall the Saltwater Film Society's second annual Oscahs Night nonetheless convinced a number of hardy movie buffs to dress up and make their way to The Strand Theatre in Rockland. Downed cable lines cut off the video feed after the Best Supporting Actress presentation—but that didn't stop several lucky attendees from winning door-prizes (and the odds weren't bad!).

Still, the event lasted about an hour and a half, about the length of a standard feature film. The SFS is betting on better weather next year.

Dr Jeckyll & Mr Hyde Devlishly Fun

Another in our series of classic silent horror flicks. In 2008, it was Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, a deathly tale, with "live" accompaniment by the amazing Devil Music Ensemble. Once again, the audience that jammed The Strand sat riveted throughout the show

There're plenty of spooky photos in our gallery.

West Side Story A Summer Sellout

A New York City–themed block party highlighted the third anniversary of the Grand Reopening of Rockland's Main Street The Strand Theatre on 06 July 2008. Plus, of course, the Academy Awards–winning blockbuster musical from a more innocent American era.

Blade Runner a Rousing Success

Hardy a seat could be had at the Strand Theatre on May 31, 2008, as our screening (on an appropriately rainy night) of the remastered "final cut" of the tech noir classic Blade Runner was a resounding good time.
