"Grease" Was the Word

The guys arrived all greased up—and the ladies came in actual poodle skirts. A good-sized throng lined up on 03 July 2011 for our annual gala event at The Strand Theatre to enjoy—and participate in—a special sing-along version of the 1978 musical classic Grease.

Beforehand, there were hot dogs, popcorn, and those tiny bottles of cola—all free!—and doo-wop tunes filled the block on Rockland's Main Street. A classic ar or two even motored by. And during the show, the audience showed enthusiasm and good vocal range. All in all, another successful annual celebration at The Strand1

The Saltwater Film Society's Oscar NightRed Carpet, 2011

Yet another successful dress-up event. People of all ages donned gowns and tuxes—and other outlandish attire—to attend our annual "live" Oscars extravaganza at The Strand Theatre. Not only did they get to see The King's Speech haul in the awards, but a few lucky attendees went home with a nice range of door prizes. (One even scored an Apple iPad for the price of a raffle ticket.)

The Saltwater Film Society's FrankenfestFrankenfest!

Hard-core Frankenstein-loving cinephiles slithered out of the woodwork on 22 October 2010 to attend our SFS Frankenfest—presented at (and in conjunction with) The Strand Theatre in Rockland, proved frighteningly successful! In case you missed it, we showed Frankenstein (starring Boris Karloff), and Mel Brooks's hilarious 1974 remake, Young Frankenstein.

South PacificSome Enchanted Afternoon

Wonderful weather and a restored print of the classic 1958 musical South Pacific made this year's celebration of the reopening of The Strand Theatre one of the most memorable. Flocks of passersby stopped to enjoy free food, drink, and icy desserts at our pre-feature block party, and film attendees gamely sang along with South Pacific's familiar musical numbers. The Fifth Anniversary event was co-presented by the SFS and The Strand Theatre.

Maine Surf Film FestRockland Surf Festival a Hit

On Saturday, 24 April 2010, the The Strand Theatre and Saltwater Film Society conspired to present a full day of surfing-related documentaries, art, and gear—and people traveled from miles around to attend. Surfboards lined the lobby of The Strand, as like-minded surfing aficionados packed The Strand to see five unique, inspiring films—including the Maine premiere of 180° South—celebrating the ocean and the wave.
